Correspondences are very helpful in magickal workings. Symbols help us to focus, remember what it is we're doing, and remind us of the nature of things. When performing a ritual, we can greatly increase our success by having meaningful symbols around us. We can also ruin what would have otherwise been a wonderful ritual by having too many symbols and trinkets to keep straight. Generally I have a candle or candles of appropriate color, often inscribed with words or runes to add to its power, a quartz point, good for focusing and amplifying energy, and a piece of paper, or other object representing what I'm working on. You can, of course, have as many symbols as you like, or as few, just so long as you know what they represent and how they'll be used in ritual.
I have set up several tables below, listing different correspondences. The first, on the Goddess and God, you will find:
- Side of the body/altar, they are associated with.
- Color correspondences.
- Directions they govern.
- Tools under their influence.
- Holidays honoring them.
Goddess | God |
Left | Right |
Silver, Green, Blue | Gold, Yellow, Red |
West, North | East, South |
Cauldron, Chalice, Pentacle, Salt, Crystals | Athame, Wand, Incense, Candles, Staff |
Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas | Yule, Ostara, Litha, Mabon |
Next, I have set up a directional correspondence table, including:
- Elemental correspondences.
- Color correspondences. *
- Tools they are associated with. **
- Areas of existence they influence.
East | South | West | North |
Air | Fire | Water | Earth |
Yellow/White | Red/Red | Blue/Gray | Green/Black |
Athame/Wand | Wand/Athame | Chalice | Pentacle |
Thought, wisdom, intuition | Passion for life, engergy | Emotions, reactions | Acceptance, integration |
* - The colors listed first in this line are those generally accepted throughout the Craft. The colors listed second deal with Ceremonial Magick.
** - Depending on your tradition and thinking, the Wand and Athame are interchangeable as Air/East, Fire/South tools.
Here I have included a color correspondence table. You can use this to choose an appropriately colored candle for your spell or ritual. Colors affect different people in different ways, so if you feel a different color would be more effective, go ahead and use what feels right.
